  • Occurrence

    Worldwide, most notable locations are Australia, Africa, Brazil, Russia, India and most recently, Northern Canada. Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April.

  • Appearance

    The normal range of colors in diamonds run from colorless to slightly yellow or brown. "Fancy colors" are those colors outside the normal range, and are found in all colors. The most sought after are colorless, and the more intense "fancy colors", blue, pink and red. Red diamonds are among the rarest of all gemstones, only two are known to exist.

  • Enhancements

    Diamond is occasionally to commonly laser drilled to improve appearance. Surface cavities or fractures are occasionally filled with a hardened surface. Colored diamonds are occasionally irradiated and/or heat treated to induce "fancy" colors.

  • Grading

    Diamonds are graded by carat weight, color, clarity and cut. These are known as the "four C's"

    • Carat Weight
      The actual weight of the diamond, measured in carats.
    • Color
      Color is usually graded using the GIA grading scale, which ranges from "D" to "Z". "D" color diamonds are colorless, and "Y" is the darkest yellow. "Z" indicates a fancy color.
    • Clarity
      Clarity is also graded using a GIA clarity grading scale.
      • F, FL : Flawless
      • IF : Internally Flawless
      • VVS1, VVS2 : Very very slightly included, inclusions are very hard to see under magnification.
      • VS1, VS2 : Very slightly included, inclusions are hard to see under magnification.
      • SI1, SI2 : Slightly included, inclusions are easy to see under magnification, may be visible without magnification.
      • I1, I2, I3 : Imperfect, inclusions are visible to the naked eye.
    • Cut
      Grading the cut is not as standardized as the other C's, but is graded according to overall finish, proportions, brilliance and general appearance of the diamond.
